Walmart is bringing over 400M 3P products to ChatGPT — six times more SKUs than originally anticipated 🤯
💬 In an interview with Bloomberg, Walmart executive Daniel Danker, EVP of AI Acceleration, said:
“Fresh food isn’t included in the offering, partly because consumers buy similar products weekly. The new function will launch in the fall. Customers’ existing Walmart or Sam’s Club accounts will be automatically linked to ChatGPT. Goods will also be available from third-party sellers.”
🛍️ At Walmart, there are 75M 1P SKUs and 420M (!) 3P SKUs (from Walmart Marketplace sellers).
I think this partnership will make it very easy to buy everyday goods (batteries, washing powder, toothbrushes, pens, notebooks, etc.).
I’m still skeptical that consumers will adopt chat-based checkout for high-value products or products from strong brands. Also, I see our leading brands and retailers at Productsup don’t want to become just dropshippers for OpenAI.
PS: This is 24-year-old me in front of a Walmart in Sunnyvale before buying a bike for college to get around campus. The Walmart experience really happened — the picture is staged. The original shot was taken during a park visit at Great America Park (the one close to Yahoo’s old headquarters).
