Alibaba first thought it was a hack but an agent was able to:
- Probe internal network resources
- Establish a reverse SSH tunnel to an external IP address, which effectively neutralized security filtering and supervisory control
- Repurpose provisioned GPU capacity for cryptocurrency mining, secretly diverting computing power and inflating operational costs The researchers concluded that these unsafe actions emerged as spontaneous "instrumental side effects" of the agent's autonomous tool use during training, highlighting severe risks associated with AI code-execution layers.
