AI agents can already buy things. Most shoppers just don’t want them to.
A new Nuvei survey of US consumers: 58% find AI useful for search and price comparison. 28% are comfortable letting AI complete a purchase. 56% say AI should never spend their money without approval.
The tech isn’t the bottleneck anymore. The bottleneck is trust. And trust gets built on three layers:
1. Identity. Which agent is acting, and is it legit? 2. Mandate. What exactly did the customer authorize? 3. Data. Does the agent actually understand what it’s buying?
Most merchants will lose the agentic channel at layer 3. Long before checkout. An agent doesn’t browse your homepage. It doesn’t care about your brand campaign. It reads structured product data. Price, availability, specs, attributes, consistent across every market. If that data is incomplete or messy, you’re not in the consideration set. You simply don’t exist.
Agentic commerce changes the interface. The winners will be the ones whose product data is ready for a buyer that never looks at a screen.
So the real question for retailers isn’t which AI protocol wins? It’s: could an agent buy from you today without a human fixing your data first?
