Amazon Shop Direct launched last week and it's kind of wild... First of all, it's free (for now). Amazon doesn’t actually charge the merchant a commission or referral fee for sales.

Whether a customer clicks "Shop Direct" and is redirected to a merchant website, or they use the "Buy for Me" AI agent (where Amazon’s AI navigates the merchants site and fills out the checkout for the customer), the actual transaction takes place on the merchant checkout system.

In addition Amazon doesn't even require a traditional seller agreement or fee structure for Shop Direct as they pull product data from publicly available brand websites sometimes listing merchants without their explicit prior consent. Many independent sellers only realized they were part of the program when standard DTC orders started showing up with Amazon relay email addresses 😬

What's the motivation behind this?

🔁 Keeping the Customer on Amazon: They want shoppers to start every product search on Amazon, even if the item isn't sold in their warehouses.

🗂️ Data Collection: By acting as the middleman for the broader web, Amazon gathers incredibly valuable market intelligence on what people are buying, trending products, and competitive pricing across external sites.

💰 Ad Revenue: By keeping the product discovery on their platform, Amazon ensures that brands and sellers will continue to spend their advertising budgets within the Amazon ecosystem.

I am curious to see what this develops into. Google Shopping 2.0?
