#Google has launched the The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) 🛍️🤖. It is a new open standard designed to make "agentic commerce" (shopping using AI assistants) seamless.
Think of it as a universal translator for the shopping world. Before UCP, if an AI agent (like Gemini or a shopping bot) wanted to buy something from a store, it needed a custom-built connection to that specific store's website. UCP creates a "shared language" so that any AI agent can talk to any merchant's system to find products, handle payments, and manage orders without needing custom code for every single shop.
What are the core components of UCP?
UCP is built like a stack of layers.
This modular approach allows it to be flexible:
📦 Shopping Service (The Core): This is the foundation that defines basic shopping actions, like starting a checkout session, listing items, and calculating totals.
💪 Capabilities (The Skillset): These are functional blocks that a merchant can "turn on." Examples include Product Discovery, Checkout, and Order Management.
🧩 Extensions (The Details): These allow for specific, complex rules. For example, a "Fulfillment Extension" handles whether a product is for store pickup, local delivery, or international shipping.
🔍 Discovery Mechanism: This allows an AI agent to automatically "ask" a store, "What can you do?" The store responds with its profile, listing the capabilities and payment methods it supports.
